Contributing to free software requires privilege. Even regular contributors might sometimes find themselves without it.

Time, focus and money. You might find yourself lacking in one of these at various points in your life.

While software projects from startups move like streams, most free software projects move like glaciers. They move slowly but they keep moving for decades.

Being away from a project doesn't mean you have to give it up. You can join back later.

ukpol, ACAB, how to "breach the peace" with a bag

"Pink Peacock hasn’t even opened its doors and is already ruffling blue feathers.

On Monday at around 1.30pm, Morgan Holleb and Joe Isaac – founders of the Glasgow-based queer Yiddish anarchist pay-what-you-can café – were tucking into lunch and an episode of Star Trek when they received a visit from the police. The officers told the pair they were suspected of breaching the peace – for displaying a 'fuck the police' tote bag in their shop window."

"Holleb only realised he’d been charged with a crime after seeing a story in the Glasgow Times."

"On Wednesday, the Scottish Sun published a hit piece on the 'anarchy diner', saying it had 'sparked fury by banning cops and ‘terfs’' The following night, a man painted over the shop front, which also had its window smashed on 27 May, though it is unclear whether the attack was targeted."

The outcome, as tweeted by the owners:

"last night an avid sun reader painted over our window, but was stopped by some lovely comrades who caught him on camera and 'took his paint off him and wacked him with his own roller'"

Reading: Black and British (slavery, history)

I just want to say that David Olusoga's book 'Black and British: A Forgotten History' is really REALLY good. He has a really accessible style and knows how to use the original sources, often from black people, to tell a story.

Obviously, some of the events you read about are upsetting, so it can be a hard read at times. But I think an essential one, especially for white people.

I highly recommend this book.

Oh, and thanks to this book, I've finally learned where the term 'Jim Crowe' comes from.

😩 The printer of my self-published comic books announced a dramatic increase of prices (+45%) starting 1st July. That's sad... So, if you want them, I invite you to shop in June before the price hike: drivethrucomics.com/browse/pub

Asexuality has nothing to do with repressive ideas of sexual virtue. Aces are not more self-controlled, we do not necessarily refrain from sex, we are not waiting for the "right" person to come along, and we are not all monogamous. Moralizing our lack of sexual attraction does not help us and only feeds into slut-shaming rhetoric.

Canada genocide

On top killing 200+ indigenous children in 1 Canadian school, they also have been force-inserting IUDs into 9 year olds to sterilize them this decade in ongoing genocide. Canada likes goin after others' human rights violations, but maybe clean the child bones out your house first

Reading audiobooks is still reading.

If you say you read an audiobook you don't have to "correct" yourself. I'd argue that you /shouldn't/, that you'd get less correct.

There's no need to say "well no I didn't read it" if it was an audiobook. There's no need to put "reading" in scare quotes.

It's reading just as much as reading print is.

I know there are worse problems, but it sucks having my favored reading format denigrated by sighted people, even to the point of them denying it's "real."

So you know how one of @kde@mastodon.technology's goals is privacy, right? Well, turns out we've been doing a (very tiny) bit of (very extremely unintended) phoning home for a while, and as of now, that doesn't happen any longer. Here's some words i wrote about that :) kath-leinir.blogspot.com/2021/

Hot take: lot of thumbs down on Chronicles of Riddick is cause the West is full of racist cop & US military stans that didn't like sympathetic POC prisoners & Muslims coexisting peacefully w/other religions in the space-Middle East when US was demonizing them to make war there.

ukpol, voter ID, ERS petition

The Electoral Reform Society is administering a petition against the UK government's plans to require photo ID (your responsibility and cost) for all voters.

As in the US, there's no justification for this other than disenfranchisement of people less likely to vote Conservative.

UK pol - please respond to a consultation

The Tories want to cut funding for university arts by 50%. This will lead to many university arts and music departments shutting and then posh people can go back to hoarding all cultural capital. Working class musicians will keep making music forever, but they'll do so without the benefits of access to higher education. Effectively, access to some art forms will be severely limited for people who aren't ruling class.

There's a consultation on this, which you can do today or tomorrow. survey.officeforstudents.org.u

For more information, see this post from the Musicians Union: musiciansunion.org.uk/news/mu-

The consultation form is long and confusing - it's fine to only respond to the sections about arts cuts and leave the rest blank.

Please do respond to the consultation, or at least spare a boost! This will be catastrophic for arts if it goes through.

"Why are you even protesting?"

300 black lives not ended by police brutality, that's why. It would have been worth it for even one.

RT @SociologistRay@twitter.com

“municipalities where BLM protests have been held experienced as much as a 20 percent decrease in killings by police, resulting in an estimated 300 fewer deaths nationwide in 2014–2019.”

Over the past 15 years of using #XMPP, I've seen many messengers come and go. People complain about the hassle of switching messengers, but many express a preference for the "simplicity" of gated gardens.... Do they count the cost of switching as well?

A truly sustainable messenger can only be a decentralized protocol, not just an app.
