New position statement from a large cross-section of the #OpenSource community (including both @osi and @fsfe) with final comments about what's wrong with the #CRA - tl;dr:
"legal responsibility should only be on commercial entities supplying the software in the course of a commercial activity"

PSA: Google has now begun to roll-out the Ad Topics "feature" onto Android itself. It's not just in Chrome you have to disable the settings. Please #Boost to spread awareness.
If you didn't get the pop-up screen on your Android device (it'll look like the first two screenshots), to opt-out of these settings:
If you don't see "Ad Privacy" in Step 4 then it means that it hasn't been rolled out to you yet. You might need to wait and check back in a couple of days to see if/when it has been implemented to disable these settings.

Where to Buy eBooks (Other Than Amazon)
Every six months or so for the past several years, I’ve been doing a thread on Fedi about where to buy ebooks other than Amazon. It finally occurred to me that I could write it once, put it up on website, and update as needed, rather than constantly reinventing the wheel.
So, here we are. (And in spite of the title, this isn’t JUST about eBooks)...

Don't like supporting Amazon? Don't blame you. There's better places to buy your books. Come take a look!

Unity: We need more funding for engine development, therefore we will unilaterally increase fees and start charging per installation, or you can be exempt from that if you lock yourself into our advertising platform, and it's not like you can really switch to a competitor anyway
Godot: We need more funding for engine development, therefore we will cut out the donation processing middleman so that we get to keep more of your contribution, and do an additional funding drive for those who can afford it, but don't worry if you can't contribute!
I don't know, but if I were a game developer, I'd certainly be developing some Opinions around engine choices and sustainability right about now

Every time I hear people argue that copyright is bad because rich psychopaths and powerful corporations abuse it, I think back to reading Jurassic Park and getting annoyed that Crichton really did write a novel about how science is bad because rich psychopaths and powerful corporations abuse it.
Think of how “X is bad because rich psychopaths and powerful corporations abuse it” is also regularly deployed to attack basic commerce, medicine, climate action, and many other things, and maybe, maybe you will finally notice that there’s actually one glaring common denominator right under your nose.
If you refuse to… well, I can only promise one thing: whatever you invent to replace copyright, please know in advance that rich psychopaths and powerful corporations will abuse it.
It's coming! The date for the big release of KDE's new desktop environment has been set.
#Plasma6 should land on your computer in February 2024 🤞.

Can we get a solarpunk rival to burning man, where people congregate to permanently upgrade civic infrastructure somewhere instead? Like a convention of hippy nerds going door to door offering to install free insulation, guerilla gardening on empty lots, repairing derelict houses, running volunteer transit, hosting pop-up pay-what-you-can grocers and restaurants.. something that revels in _mattering_ instead of "leaving no trace" (but at exorbitant cost)
