Today I'm struck by Zuckerberg spending something like a billion dollars on the "metaverse" to create legless sausage VR avatars and meanwhile volunteer furries are beta-testing advanced finger tracking systems so they can use sign language in VR chat with PAWS, and not only does it work, it's like a billion times more enticing on _every level_.
billionaires are a mistake
KDE's End of Year ๐ฐ#fundraiser๐ฐ is officially open! Your #donations will help us reach our goals, support our community, fund our events, and show the whole world ๐ how everybody can benefit from KDE software.
I am always taken aback when someone dismisses fantasy as "escapism". What's wrong with escapism? What's wrong with longing for different worlds than this? Have you seen this world? Its brokenness and sharp thorns?
Did you not grow up desperately looking for your door elsewhere? Did you not immerse in beautiful worlds as sustenance, for moments of joy like wings?
For a time in my life I stretched out. Grimdark, New Weird, etc. But no more. Give me hopepunk and found family. Give me escape.
Flickr CEO Don MacAskill (@d0n) is currently running a poll to decide whether to add #ActivityPub to Flickr to join the #fediverse (Mastodon, Pixelfed, Peertube, etc.)
Make your voice heard:

Poll on Twitter too:

Remember this has good and bad repercussions whether you use Flickr or not, it would be the first time an old giant joins us but also would bring many many new issues we would have to face together. Please boost for reach!
The current Star Citizen free-fly ends at UTC2000 on the 30th-and you can currently borrow (or "rent" for free) nearly any ship in the game by dropping by the rental kiosks in the basement of the Zenith hall at the Tobin Expo Center (follow the red signs all over New Babbage ;) ) https://computerfairi.es/@leinir/109342210895530994
Economics: Humans only value things monetarily.
Sociology: Uh, I don't ...
Economics: Humans are always rational and value is calculated by a complex inner calculus.
Sociology: Uh, Psy, can you help?
Psychology: That's not how humans ...
Economics: ALSO MY SYSTEM WILL GROW EXPONENTIALLY FOREVER!!
Physics: *drops teacup*
A couple of useful updates - sorry, i should've just added these to the thread here to start with, so doing it now... didn't want this to end up context-less :D https://computerfairi.es/@leinir/109403689227982214
An update on that recommendation for what ship to get - the introductory offer on the Drake Cutter starter game package ( https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/Packages/Cutter-IAE-Starter-Pack-Warbond ) is currently by a long way the best value starter package, at least until the 8th of December, when it's due to increase up to its intended full price. Also, if you want to nab Squadron 42 as well, that'll be offered for an extra 20 quid at checkout (it'll look weird when it's offered, but it'll become 20 when you add it to the cart) :) as always, ask!
There's an ugly storm brewing in EU software security legislation that could seriously impact open source software development. Those of you in the EU should read this article and do some lobbying. The goals of the legislation aren't unreasonable, but the conformance-testing burden would totally overwhelm the OSS community. The legislators need to rethink how they approach the burden and responsibility of auditing. https://blog.nlnetlabs.nl/open-source-software-vs-the-cyber-resilience-act/
Hey so Telegram is starting to try and implement more NFT shit again - please go to https://t.me/designers and fucking downvote this into oblivion
Hey everyone, did you know it's almost #Wolfenoot ?
It is when the Spirit of the Wolf brings and hides small gifts around the house for everyone. People who have, have had, or are kind to dogs get better gifts than anyone else.
You eat roast meat (because wolves eat meat) and cake decorated like a full moon.
Itโs on the 23rd November if anyone else is moved to celebrate it. If you do, please post pics, so he can see how his idea has spread.
Sharing an interesting #foss #dev job opening from @kde
"KDE e.V., the non-profit organisation supporting the KDE community, is looking to hire a software engineer to help improve the software stack that KDE software relies on."
https://ev.kde.org/resources/callforproposals-platform2022/
It's a #remote contract position, and a great paid opportunity for people who have already contributed to KDE software. But even if you haven't, you can still apply! All details are in the linked job description. Good luck ๐ช
HEY HEY FRENZ on mastodon.social! You may want to MOVE to a new instance, very soon.
Why?
Mastodon is a bunch of islands that can talk to each other. The smaller and more spread out we are, the easier things are to moderate. Horizontal scaling FTW!
All of you who fled that one site ๐ค ended up at mastodon.social for likely a few reasons. It was obvious, it was big, and it's where you saw a bunch of folks going.
But it has a long history of being poorly moderated, which means a LOT of instances are silencing or blocking it. Which means you're on the big island that SEEMS like it's "where everyone is", but in fact, it's a giant island unto itself (momentarily trending toward turning into a post-bird-site echo chamber), and huge swaths of the Fediverse don't talk to it, or even see it.
If you want the quality of interaction (and moderation!) Mastodon is known for, move thy funky buns to a smaller instance of cool folks you enjoy.
As promised, a quick update on the free-fly: You won't need a voucher this time, all you need is that account, and then you download the RSI client, through which you log in and download the game (likely won't work until Friday 1600 UTC)
https://computerfairi.es/@leinir/109342210895530994 has a bit more detail, and https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/18975-Intergalactic-Aerospace-Expo-2952-Free-Fly has a bunch more :)
