There is a very clear and direct line from Discord cropping up as a free, well made, comprehensive replacement for direct communications that gamers use, sticking to a memey gaming theme, and opening an online game store once their install base is huge after making no money.
Like people would ask "How does Discord actually make money?" And the answer was "They don't but they will"

@lizardsquid that's a good question. It'll probably change a bunch, requiring nitro for more features and instead of opening new servers for free you'd have to pay or host it on your own actual server like with mumble or IRC. I don't imagine they'd shut it down before cutting costs, if they were making any money at all from the store.

I doubt they'll have problems though, they were really smart taking this approach.
