less people utterly destroying people's feeds. People are still going to write the same amount of stuff, its just split up way less. Depending on how long this goes, i'll put a bar line after every 500 ish things* so that you can see how ridiculous this same post would be.
I love the mid-form posts on social media like this, They are much shorter than say, a blog post but they give a lot more room to think and write, and ------------------------------------------------- prevents mincing words to try to prove a point. I write for others to read, and when i wrote blog posts, people never really got to read them, conversion from a social media post to ones blog is much lower than just posting as is. I wish that wasn't the case but it really is.
I've been writing posts for a long time and even on twitter with 140 characters, my long massive threads tended to be the most interacted with. It seems that people want to read what is said in long form but they don't ----------------------------------------------- want to deal with leaving the site and moving their attention. This is probably why sites like Tumblr were so popular. It mixed the social interactions that you get on platforms like Twitter, fedi, etc with an expectation of short to mid-length posts... but long form was just as reasonable too.
I don't know what the right answer for any of this is, There are a lot of reasons to want to have character limits, one such reason is it pushes long-form writing to blogs actually. Long form writing --------------------------------------------------- understandably takes longer to read and takes up more of someone's attention. That has pros and cons, like anything... But keep in mind that often you'll see the same writing just split up into mega threads, and these are often the most boosted things, and take more time and spoons to read and are ... worse still, usually badly edited to fit the limitations put forth by the platforms.
* not including CWs which count to limit, or writing around the limit
@rachel 500 characters is never enough when you want to express complicated ideas - I like how dragon.style has a limit of 7777 characters, because it means that you're not restricted to such a small amount, but it also discourages you from writing a really huge essay.
I think also: tumblr's post -width- actually helps considerably to make long posts feel less long. Here, and on twitter, long posts have way too many linebreaks to feel comfy.
