it's originally an entomology term about beetle wings.
From a linguistic perspective of course, the Correct™ pronunciation of a word is the way the majority of speakers pronounce it - and I think there are far more minecraft players saying /e.lai.trə/ or /e-lɪ-trə/ than there are entomologists saying /e-lə-trə/

@lizardsquid also in terms of how things are pronounced, watching german minecraft youtubers/streamers can sometimes be very fascinating in terms of butchered english due to despite a German translation existing by now, the game started out being only available in English, so a lot of people are still used to the English terms
