nb erasure, a common mistake

if your reaction to the gender binary is to take the male/female binary and turn it into a line from male to female with "agender" in the middle, you... have missed the complexities of how gender actually works...

you need a two dimensional graph at the very least

@lizardsquid "Agender in the middle" doesn't even make sense!! That's the opacity slider!!!

@lizardsquid Not sure if partly prompted by what I said but, for sure.

(I don't really know where I am on masc/fem but I'm low on the gender total - I just get like moments of gender feels each way on occasion)

@Fenreliania (it wasn't prompted by you, it was prompted by me making a similar mistake, and by a DM)

@lizardsquid ternary gender, if not quaternary, etc.

@lizardsquid There is a reason I never say "gender is a spectrum".

The reason is simple. Spectrum—to anyone other than the equivocator—is a word that has only one meaning: an ordered, sequential continuum or range.

There is no way to hear the word spectrum and not think of a series of things in a line—in the continuous manner of the real number line.

Attempts to retcon the term to encompass non-assignable genders fail, because the term itself is simply inadequate.

@lizardsquid

Gender is a potpourri or mélange.

Gender is a patchwork or bricolage.

Gender is a medley or motley grab bag.

Gender is a Whizzo Quality Assortment, complete with mystery flavors, bucking all consumer labeling regulations.

Gender is not a spectrum. Never is gender anything so ordered or ever so sequentially linear as a mere spectrum.

@beadsland gender is not a boring old line!

it's interesting and complex!

even for the people who fit into binary categories, that complexity is hidden behind the surface

@lizardsquid Gender is more Jackson Pollock than Newton's Prism.

@lizardsquid Gender is a riot, a cacophony, a holiday jumble sale, a thicket of ferocious dust bunnies and feral lost socks.

@lizardsquid Gender is a Hilbert space
