question about video game level editors
hey, are there any tools like Source Engine's hammer that are:
* available on linux
* don't require me to purchase a game first?
I'm getting really nostalgic for the level design stuff I used to do for portal and half life 2, and I want to mess around again, but don't have windows
question about video game level editors
@lizardsquid UDK? I think there's free copies of that accessable but I dunno if it's linux friendly.
Unity has level editing tools too?
question about video game level editors
@Draekos it's not *just* level editing tools I'm looking for
I'm looking for stuff that is like Hammer
question about video game level editors
@lizardsquid Hammer was just the map editor no? I mean both UDK and Unity are game engines/tools like Source.
question about video game level editors
@Draekos yes, I'm specifically looking for the map editor, not the engine
I don't care about what engine the editor is attached to
question about video game level editors
@lizardsquid dunno, I'd still point to Unity because it's free and there's boatloads of tutorials and stuff for it. Dunno if you're going to find a stand alone editor. Sorry D:
question about video game level editors
@Draekos @lizardsquid Unity is not officially supported on Linux yet (though there's builds) and I don't think there's anything like Hammer (or will ever be again, it's Valve's hombrew stuff!) but if you just want to make levels to run around in, Blender has a game engine!
question about video game level editors
@lizardsquid @Draekos there's no similar tool! it was made -specifically- to make the games Valve made with it XD
question about video game level editors
@lizardsquid you could check out sauerbraten or tesseract. idk about getting them going on linux or whatever and they're quite old, but if you wanna just mess around with a 3d space they're pretty simple

@lizardsquid http://tesseract.gg/
http://sauerbraten.org/
fun thing: they're both cooperative, so you and friends can edit levels together in real time. it's neat
question about video game level editors
@X these aren't quite what I wanted, but they look fun anyway!
question about video game level editors
looks like I'm going to have to *literally make my own program*
