bad thing from D&D
A lot of groups have all the players make a character by themselves, before meeting.
Don't do this*. It's way easier to make characters that fit together if you make them together.
*ask your GM, at least

@lizardsquid Have you ever seen the way the Fate system does character creation? @Terrana could tell you more, but it explicitly requires player characters to show up in each other's backstories.

@lizardsquid To be fair, I did convention play this way for years. The trick is to bring a bunch of characters and be flexible about what you play

@Canageek oh I didn't think about convention play, that's reasonable

@lizardsquid What we've done from time to time in my current game is have someone play an existing charger it NPC for a while then build their character once they've been in the game a while
bad thing from D&D
@lizardsquid agreed!!! it helps new people make characters faster, and as you mentioned, it helps make the team more balanced and fit together

this actually caused a problem with a game I was going to run: I set up a group chat, organised some details, went to bed.
The next day, I checked the chat and overnight several of them had made their characters already.
