neat linux terminal trick of the day, to copy a large amount of files over the network:

$ tar cf - <files> | ssh -C user@host "cd /wherever; tar xvf -"

up at a time that i shouldn't be thinking about klasky/csupo animation

muting anybody who joined after 2017 making threads that start with "dear mastodon noobs"

except... now i can't dim the brightness or use a resolution other than 1024x768

what a quirk!

it's a good thing i kept the original panel from when i did an SXGA upgrade on my X61t (before, with vinegar syndrome, and after)

turns out thinkpad X61 LCD panels work on (some models of) the iBook G4

@omegabyte hi! the earliest email in my self-hosted inbox is from 2019. it's been going for 6 years. Hope I could help!

@apex and that's a valid concern! but it's by no means "difficult" for anyone already versed in self-hosting to spin up a mail server. i would absolutely have qualms about my own ability to keep a 99.9% uptime too

i think it's time to dispel the myth that is hard if a dumdum like me can set up github.com/docker-mailserver/d in a USD12/mo linode box (which also hosts my websites, so that's not USD12 for mail alone) in like 15 minutes

the hardest part is just getting the DNS DKIM, DMARC and SPF values right

@anna @rennerocha @juliobiason judging by me sending email from it to my personal gmail, i would say a cautious no

@rennerocha @juliobiason @anna i have github.com/docker-mailserver/d in a linode box for hello@transbian.love which admittedly is only ever used for our threadless account so it hasn't seen heavy usage but for me it pretty much has been 15-minute set it and forget it, though if i wanted to use it more seriously i would probably take more care with it

You don't need a blog, despite what a lot of Mastodon posts would have you believe.

It's okay to feel like you don't have something the world needs to read. It's okay to save your stories up for when you encounter people in real life. It's okay to write things down in a private diary.

What's not okay is recording important information in closed-off spaces like Discord or Facebook. If you have knowledge that could benefit others, please do get a blog.

@elliotnunn also the post you replied to is also the start of a thread where i do say more about it (though, again, pictures currently broken)

@elliotnunn yeah older pictures are currently broken in my instance, sorry

not terribly exciting, just some modified roms for the Unitron 1024 Mac clone that never released

dosfox wrote more about it tech.lgbt/@DosFox/112506975154
