@suricrasia perish the thought of Ubuntu boxen where the easiest way to get up to date PHP is one single guy's PPA

So today some of the worst people on earth using the most environmentally destructive tools on earth brought down a huge part of the internet by exploiting a potential problem found many years ago in PHP which was previously not practical for anyone to exploit.

It only became "practical" to exploit this problem because "AI" came along to automate the boring and repetitive work required to do so. Absurd amounts of computing power were applied specifically to break into other peoples' websites.

Now the same people who are behind this are trying to pretend that they're heroes for finding an exploit.

"AI uncovers critical vulnerabilities", their headline reads. But the vulnerability was only made to be critical by the very same people as hide behind that headline.

Many thousands of websites are offline, many people are losing money, many thousands of people are working hard to try to patch or work around the problem, many small guys are finding it almost impossible to patch, and we're all supposed to be thankful to OpenAI and others involved ? Nah. Fuck off.

Everything about "AI" involves a lot of externalized costs, but I've still yet to see even a single positive thing that has been achieved by "AI". That has definitely not changed today.

metaphors for explaining the current situation to non-tech-savvy people:

  • the big safe in your local bank turns out to have a combination luggage lock that’s guarding everything inside it
  • two of the three digits on that lock is jammed
  • the third digit is 4

meanwhile that is happening,

  • landlines can catch fire now out of nowhere
  • and the phone company is only updating recently made landlines.
  • this is making many landline owners to unplug their phones so they don’t catch fire

in the span of less than a year the words "reverse engineered" lost all meaning

i think if you genuinely hate a specific programming language you have bigger problems than being on the computer

as a php liker today hurts but i will persevere

there's a disingenuous argument i see go completely unchallenged all the time, which is "this <computer thing> deserves to be respected and celebrated, because it underpins the entire world and you wouldn't have {products, services, entertainment, electricity, food, etc} without it". like, we had supermarkets before SQL. we had maps before Google Maps. the world functioned successfully, it just wasn't on Computer. now it *needs* Computer, when it didn't before. strange to brag about that, really

the main thing that's good about the web as a medium, imo, is that you can just chuck something into a directory and then it will appear in web browsers around the world. you can edit the file and hit save and refresh. the magic that you feel is the core of the entire thing. and as far as i've seen, Web Development, as a discipline, has focused for the last few decades on systematically destroying that magic

@steeph
1) all 3 classics are ironforge 3.8, i'm cheating because one is actually broken atm
2) because the original company is long gone, the person who used to be CTO for it 20 years ago is now hosting it on his own and uses subscriptions to keep the server costs paid
3) yes
4) no but also yes, it's not the original company
5) yes but i like to support Duane and his spin-off

@atax1a from my limited knowledge using swd, what would i see without an attached debug source code? just registers changing? how would i tell what's working?

@atax1a we do have a j-link but very little idea how to do what with it

i realize how likely it is that voltage sensitive parts such as CPU, RAM or flash are probably cooked. but i'd really like to bring it back if at all possible

so i have a broken chumby classic (ironforge 1.8: files.blueocty.com/hdwedocs/IR ). in some sort of fashion, there was a short in a power rail somewhere (i suspect DC in and ground, but i'm not sure if so, or if that was indeed the root cause) which blew a diode and some buck regulators. i have now replaced all those parts and checked that all voltages (5v, 3v3, 1v8) are correct and the unit does power on however never functions beyond a white screen

spitballing appreciated :boost_ok:

it's funny how sometimes one misremembers how old one is because the perception of whether someone is older gets lagged behind. like it just saw someone who's 27 and its next queued process was "ah, older than it"

it's 32 years old.

@NanoRaptor nowhere near the "most" of things i own, but this made me think about how i'm probably one of the last few people with multiple (3 in this case) Chumby devices, and an active subscription to blue octy to keep them functional
