How did we get from "information wants to be free" to "by burning massive amounts of energy we can pretend a jpg is a scarce artifact"

suddenly dawning on me how nintendo coasted for 9 years on a black and white handheld only to then release a very marginal update to it that only added color and literally nothing else to the point it's entirely backwards compatible, then took 3 years to put out the 32bit gba

oh my god okay thank goodness

i couldn't find anything wrong but i reflowed solder to the vdp, cleaned up the board and better insulated all my work

it's not dead!

Show thread

best care scenario, power delivery or clock issues

worst case scenario, the VDP or the CPU (or both) are dead

i can't check any without an oscilloscope

Show thread

turned it on the next day and it appears dead.. sometimes there's garbage on the screen and a constant tone

don't think i can repair with without a second master system for parts

i got so excited about it too.. but looks like yesterday just everything decided to break around me

heeeeeyyyy, read up a bit more on video signals and made a resistor replacement, now the video is perfect!

the OSD is now at around the same level, whereas before it was much darker compared to the sms signal

Show thread

this is really frustrating. i can't get a new battery without importing from china (which, good luck importing lithium batteries) and buying a used tablet let alone a new one in my country is dumb expensive that i can't justify it

Show thread

haha the tablet i use every night started bulging, and it's not user serviceable, yipee!

seems to depend on who you ask, some people say even up to 5V won't damage any monitor, even though peak to peak should be about 1V (peaking about 0.7V from ground), i'm trying to make a voltage divider on the output of the amp but all i managed to do was make the image ghostier

Show thread

so i'm RGB modding a console and i don't have an oscilloscope but from a multimeter i can read about 2.9V peak on video outputs, the video works fine but is a bit bloomy on my PVM (makes the OSD dark even), and i can't find any concrete info online if that'll damage the PVM

what happens if you hold a lightbulb in your paw? — what happens is that i will be holding a lightbulb. if anything more exciting happened, my paws would probably damage most o… retrospring.net/maple_syrup/a/

as some advice for anyone who also struggles with self-deprecation: a good way to make progress towards breaking this habit is making self-aggrandizing jokes instead! saying stuff like 'i'm so amazing and sexy' helps you a lot more than constantly putting yourself down twitter.com/plounce/status/136

still no word from Commodore about making me the official mascot of the Amiga, but maybe they're just out of the office for the weekend

furries! for far too long have amy and sabrina ruled as amiga mascots! i say it's time for a new amiga mascot, and i volunteer for the role
