(i ended up not taking any pics or videos of it playing so this picture is actually from before i added an SD card to use the example VGM player, because i finished poking at it at like 2 in the morning and my girlfriends were urging me to go eat and get ready to go recharge)

managed to get a UM3567 (YM2413 clone) playing VGMs with an arduino, but for some reason (i assume SPI SD card access) it lags when there's too many commands at once (when songs are most polyphonic) so playback is very slow. gonna try to write a serial player instead
