i learnt this the hard way after running my own instance for 4 years before being forced to leave due to a harassment campaign against me which made me lose all social contacts there so if you expect to use it professionally be on your best behaviour & live in fear of all admins
if you're moving to mastodon please just consider first that it has worse moderation than twitter and this isn't discussed enough
