i think i found it!
https://web.archive.org/web/20031125201719/http://chatpoint.com/
the layout is what i remember, and there's a link to a comic, which tracks with what i remember from the site.. but all images are broken, sadly
chatpoint was also used by other websites as i remember, and it looks like today it lives on in a remake: https://www.chatadventure.nl/
CW: suicide, big conference thing
I don't know how to mourn someone I never knew but god I hope she's at rest now, I'm so sad that this keeps happening because as trans girls we're expendable, abusable fuck dolls for everyone else, trans girl refuse to be your sex toy? Say something you don't like? It's fine, just bully and ostracise her until she jumps off a bridge and say something vague about suicide hotlines that will treat us as men
CW: suicide, big conference thing
I wish I could say I'm shocked that a trans girl committed suicide because of bullying endorsed and enabled at #39c3 but it's not even mild surprise, of course these cliquey in groups that refuse COVID measures and welcome abusers would let this happen
i've tried looking for it in https://display.archive.org/nl but if i search for "chat" i can only see one of the 327 results whereas the next 326 are black. "avatar" gives 6 results all unrelated
the avatars had a pretty distinctive look to them, sort of 3d rendered, made with shaded shapes. you could mix and match clothing for your avatar to customize it
it was fairly simple in operation, the background was generally just a photograph and you could pick a place to stand around in it. it all ran in the browser, maybe it needed an applet like java or shockwave
i have been looking for years for a website i used to visit fairly often around 2005. i cannot remember the name of it, or of anything in it.
it was dutch, it had an avatar chat similar to palacechat (i remember other websites using the same avatar chat engine, and i was obsessed with them for a while)
it's possible the website's main focus was something other than the avatar chat, because it had characters and a webcomic. you could have avatars of the characters in the chat
happy new queer!!! https://orteil.dashnet.org/fireworks.html
oh it might be this one? https://youtu.be/81qCH_JxAfw?t=1416
it doesn't look like a bad demo though, i wonder if he was recalling a different demo, it's possible this would be a second time Norton was on the show after it started being syndicated
i was lucky enough to manage to get an email through to Cheifet back in 2020, thanking him for Computer Chronicles and, in jest, hoping that John Dvorak had finished putting back together that PS/2 he took apart by now.
he remarked on a tidbit that he mentioned in other interviews, about a demo by Peter Norton of UnErase that went badly on stage, sadly i reckon that must've happened on an episode prior to Computer Chronicles' syndication and i couldn't find any traces of it
RIP Stewart Cheifet of Computer Chronicles fame
hi friends,
Mike F. — a cool guy whose posts have likely made you laugh more than once — has passed away

i'm also accepting suggestions for any other type of avatar chat as well, so far i've spent like 4 hours trying to find any but either they no longer exist or have been maintained and updated to only work with modern browsers
