In considering all this, I cannot help but think about two relatively recent cases of murdered trans women, both of whom had their eyes gouged out before death. What is it in the dominant, cisgender culture that fears and refuses to be seen? (16)

I must confess that I do not believe that anti-trans sentiment is much about actual trans people at all. Rather, it is about what the dominant culture projects onto the bodies of trans women - the unresolved violence & trauma that cis people do to one another (15)

"I'm fine with trans people, I just don't want to see their penises!" is another frequent refrain of those who want to see trans women public life. It is assumed that the reason trans women want to use gendered spaces is to force their penises upon the innocent (10)

The trans woman is assumed to spring into being as a dangerous adult, equipped with a dangerous & quasi-magical capacity for violence (she can enact violence simply by existing near the rest of society). She is not assumed to exist in childhood, with vulnerability of her own (8)

It is assumed that a trans woman in a spa - or a bathroom, or any gendered space - must derive some nefarious sexual gratification from her presence. The trans woman - not unlike the gay man & the cis lesbian in generations past - is assumed to be harmful to children. (6)

The level of hatred currently being fomented towards trans people - particularly trans women - in the mainstream media is terrifying. Many of predicted there would be pendulum swing post the "trans tipping point" of the mid-2010s, but the intensity is horrifying nonetheless (1)
