there's no technical reason why geocities-style websites, forums, guestbooks, IM services couldn't exist today. you can even host all of that yourself and a lot of people indeed do. yet the majority of us stay locked in the comfort of platforms that exploit us daily
pining for a return of old web is all well and good until you have to make an actual effort towards it
