LB reminded me of the Zojirushi I-Pot, an electric kettle that provides a substantial added service: it emails a designated recipient every time you use it.

The idea is care for the elderly and those with disabilities. If someone habitually makes tea every day - and many Japanese do - then an interruption in that routine might be cause for alarm. So if an I-Pot doesn't send an email one day, the caretaker knows to check in.
