"Humans are apes. Like other apes, we enjoy organizing things into categories. I believe that we do this so that we can pretend to understand them better than we really do. What’s more, we believe that we really do it well. Consider the examples of the labels “night” and “day”. They are clearly different and mutually exclusive, so those seem like very good labels… but where do you draw the line between one and the other?"

LB reminded me of the Zojirushi I-Pot, an electric kettle that provides a substantial added service: it emails a designated recipient every time you use it.
The idea is care for the elderly and those with disabilities. If someone habitually makes tea every day - and many Japanese do - then an interruption in that routine might be cause for alarm. So if an I-Pot doesn't send an email one day, the caretaker knows to check in.
