@steven@todon.nl @kittybecca@masto.jews.international Yeah, it's very colonialist that if you don't speak "proper" (British) English you must be uneducated or rude/rowdy. (Worse if you're a woman)

I am /proud/ to speak (mostly) Hinglish, I can speak proper English, but I don't like to do so.

@steven@todon.nl @kittybecca@masto.jews.international It's considered "prestigeous" to be able to speak only English. I speak Hindi with a heavy dialect (read: mostly hinglish) and I'm considered "uneducated", I have a university degree so that's false.

Yeah, especially in Gujarat and Punjab, the utter refusal to speak the local language to the younger generations is super common.
