@garbados The thesis of the book "Debt" is that the "Barter -> Money -> Credit" progression is a myth started by early economists with things to prove. Instead it asserts that early societies are closer to a loose communism/sharing economy that evolved the idea of "I owe you one" that was eventually codified. So the actual progression is more like "Communal ownership -> Credit/Virtual currency -> Money".

Thought it was relevant incase you hadn't read it.
