okay. trying again with Ubuntu Server.

i want a GUI, but i want it to only start up a desktop environment when i remote connect.

how do i go about that.

@PsyChuan I think Gnome Remote Desktop is what you want. I haven't looked into it much but it does say it can do Remote Desktop while being headless.

@renbymon that'd be lovely. i'm still new to this. it's installed okay but i really do not know my way around setting up servers.
