At work today I helped somewith with a laptop. When we'd finished she asked for my name; when I told her my real name her face lit up and she smiled, like a proper genuine smile, and thanked me for being so helpful.

I think this is the first time that a random person has realised that I'm trans from my name and has been outwardly approving of it. 🥰

Meanwhile Elon Musk is trying to destabilize the UK.

Maybe take that into consideration next time you buy a car or cheer for SpaceX.

Found out that there's an anarchist collective in my city and I'm super tempted to volunteer at their club/venue in the new year.

Let's get this fuckin' show on the road!

Y'all know Jack Dorsey isn't involved with BlueSky and hasn't been for a long time right? Like that's the one bit of weird misinformation people seem to be fixated on. He left when they refused to leave the platform unmoderated. Since then, they've implemented a bunch of moderation tools, frankly tools that are better than this platform has. I say that as someone who was a mod for a large instance.

Was digging through some old data, in a dark corner of my network, and found THIS!
I downloaded this file using the NCSA Mosaic browser, cos it was the coolest thing i'd ever seen at the time, and have just kinda had it living on my harddrives and getting transfured from machine to machine ever since.
Looks like it's been reprocessed and stuff since the old days, but the fact it's survived at all is amazing! it says more about my data hoarding than my back-up policies, sadly XD
If you recognise this... you. are. old.

Since I saw a report about 1984 (because of a new audio version done for motherfucking Audible!) with the same talking points, here's the usual correction:

1984 is not a book about total surveillance. It's a book about how to ensure the middle class will never stand with the lower classes against power. It's about how to destroy solidarity. In 1984 only the middle class is surveilled, the lower classes (proles) and the upper class (inner party) are not. It's a book about power and class politics that is more relevant than ever - but not "because our phones surveil us".

ServiceDesk: "The latest Windows update isn't installing on the user's device."
Me: "What's the error message?"
SD: "One or more updates failed to install."
Me: "That sounds more like an application failing to install through SCCM or MECM. What application fails to install?"
SD: "No idea."
Me: "Ask the user these sorts of basic questions before passing them over to us, thanks."

From my personal experience, seeing human artists being loud and proud about using LLMs for coding leaves very bitter taste in my mouth. Like I was brainwashed into believing that using stable diffusion for art or chatgpt for localisation is a very very bad and unethical thing, but somehow when it comes to coding everyone is fine with replacing me and my profession with robots.

Nuh-uh.

If we fight AI then we fight it together, -- artists, voice actors, programmers, writers -- protecting our already pretty grim future from becoming ever more grim and making sure that human craft is treasured more than a spit from LLM.

If we tell ourselves that "there's nothing wrong in using chatgpt for code, because code is hard uwu" then please don't be surprised when at some point programmers will stop caring and will use stable diffusion to replace human crafted art with its artificial imitation.

Lmaooo

Google must not preinstall any Search Access Point on any new Google Device.

That search bar at the bottom of Android? Gone. I don't even know how Chrome OS works now.

Google must display a Choice Screen on every new and existing instance of a Google Browser where the user has not previously affirmatively selected a default [search engine] for that Google Browser, including by changing the search default through the settings.

This is arguably more aggressive than what the EU did to Microsoft and Internet Explorer.

Someone told me the Book of Rust is called the Rustonomicon and the first thing that jumped to mind was this scene from Swat Kats.

It turns out someone's upscaled the first episode to 720p from the DVDs, and it looks pretty sweet!

SO happy to have access to the whole series and can watch it whenever I want and just think an awful lot about how I wanna be The Dark Knight all the time. 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
