Just had a really interesting presentation in work where someone was looking at the energy usage of ads on websites. Measuring the processing power required to fetch all the resources and render them into a page.

Ads blocked, average of 3.1W per page. Ads allowed, average 6.8W per page. Video ads use ~20% more energy than a static image ad.

My interpretation: blocking ads helps save the planet.

Woke up to a very "hail is coming" green sky this morning; photo was taken right at sunrise. The color only lasted fifteen minutes or so, changing gradually to a more normal overcast sky.

My phone insisted on color-correcting to a normal (grey) sky. I adjusted by eye in Krita while looking out the window to try and get close to the way it actually looked.

A quick radar check shows no storms anywhere near us, and none to the east.

It's mid-week, so let's have a little moment of jazzy chill to rival the zen of SNES Sim City with the #Amiga version of Artdink's A-Train.

I enjoyed Sim City but A-Train always struck a chord with me more. I still love the art deco isometric perspective and graphics and the music is still absolutely wonderful

A-Train's mix of stock trading, real estate and rail network management makes for an interesting mix of gameplay. And with the organic growth of the towns and villages into cities is very satisfying to watch unfold.

Kinda been nice and chill painting again. Drinking wine, listening to music. Here is my Raven folk Sqiakayoh, (Sqia-koh-ah) my DnD character, ~

Building out the chest followed a similar pattern. The main shell is rigid EVA, but to allow more flex in the shoulders, those are built from softer upholstery foam.

I didn't bother to papercraft the shoulders, I took a measurement from my model and used an online calculator to help create a 1/8" sphere wedge template.

This actually represents the V1 of the chest, I ended up building a second version between its debut at MAGFest and competing at Connecticon.

Discussing the British Press, and I'm reminded of the time when I had a moderate amount of celebrity in the UK LGBT community, and the press tried to do a hit piece on me.

Now here's the thing. There's a cheat code, and I'm going to explain what it is:

They will contact you for comment.

If you say nothing, they will publish the piece and say you were offered the chance to comment.

If you tell them to fuck off, they will publish the price and say your response was foul and unprintable.

I did neither of these things. I told them that this piece wasn't journalism. It was ridiculous tittle tattle and represented everything that was wrong with a failing and dying industry more obsessed with clickbait than proper reporting. I asked them if they didn't have proper news to report, and said that they should be ashamed of themselves.

They're basically screwed at that point. "We contacted Ms Brown for comment and she said that this was ridiculous tittle tattle and that the reporter should be ashamed of herself."

They're not gonna say that.

I'm struck by something one of my history teachers once said about medieval castles. They weren't meant to be impregnable. They were meant to be annoying enough that an invading army would decide to investigate other priorities instead.

The piece never ran.

If you're a trans person in the crosshairs of the British press, make yourself an annoying target. They're on a deadline, and if you make them conclude that life is too short, they will leave you the fuck alone.
