Back when the PS2 launched, Sony had this plan to distribute updates to the console through memory cards.

They quickly ditched this idea, upon realising there was no way to guarantee any user had the latest update, etc, but they never got rid of the function for some reason.

Additional to the PS2 I bought, I also grabbed something called the Free McBoot by Kaico:

This memory card uses that functionality to boot the PS2 up in a custom boot screen, giving me access to a cheat cartridge (code breaker), the ability to play DVDs from other regions (and pirated DVDs), to play games from a USB stick, and more!

It's really cool, and means older games are now infinitely more accessible to me!

I no longer have the mobility/dexterity, or patience/clear brain, to force my way through dated controls & mechanics or difficult games, but now I can just run through the games with stuff like Infinite Health and no more worries!
