@sodiboo when I was a librarian, we would often get requests from police to access records. This is legal, but they needed two things: 1) a warrant, and 2) a Section 48 form.
They would often come in without both of these and I would tell them that I can’t help them. They would always say shit like “Um, but it’s part of a police matter. It’s urgent”. And then I would say “well, the Libraries and Museums Act say that you need to come back with a warrant and a S48 form. If you don’t have them, I can’t help you.”
They would often try to pressure me and intimidate me, but I would stand my ground. Then they would always ask to speak to my manager, and she would say the same thing (but with a bit more diplomacy). The form exists so that we know that their request to access a patron’s sensitive information is legit. What library books you use, what you browse on the computers, etc is all sensitive information and giving that information out is no bueno.
The thing is that a S48 form is trivial to complete, but I have NEVER, in all seven years of working there, ever seen a cop come back with a completed form. It seems that just a little bit of bureaucracy is a good thing.

Any help would be appreciated.

When considering the state of civil rights in the UK today, the only thing you need to know is that an 87 year old Holocaust survivor was called in for questioning by the Metropolitan Police for attending a completely peaceful anti-genocide rally.
UPD: me and my friend are working closely with dogpatch press right now.
additional development of the story: they also told me that the con director tried to confiscate their mobility aid because it had one of the antifa patches on it. and also broke their partner's glasses that are worth $100.
i encourage you to spread the word about this.
foss takes
FOSS is awesome but if you are mad about windows being evil and shitty the answer is not "tell people about linux". it isn't gonna work! it will never work! the answer is STOP MICROSOFT the answer is break the company the fuck up the answer is to get politically organized to round up all those fucks and throw em in prison for their crimes against humanity and software or whatever
but until then what you're doing is telling people "actually you're at fault here" for crimes of corps
Elite Dangerous recently rolled out a new mechanic: Player System Colonisation! Players can now go to a system and stake their own claims! They can build a space station, and they get a cut of transactions from owning it! Some player decided "hey, I like Pulsars, they look pretty, I'm going to build a space station around a Pulsar." the problem is, when you do that, the game tries to lock the orbit of the station to the rotation speed of the star.
soooo.....

Petition to sign for UK folks. Probably like trying to desalinate a piss ocean given the current state of this govt and the previous one too, but hey, every little helps, and they can't pretend we don't exist.
PSA for anyone with an #Amazon #Kindle or even just any #kindlebooks , they are about to permanently remove the ability to download books to your computer. Your last day to use this functionality is February 26, 2025, so you have about a week. There are no easy ways to grab it all at once, but it's worth it to me to be able to access my 500+ #ebooks so I'm clicking on them one by one anyway. Amazon has been very quiet about it, so spread the word.
We get A LOT of AI "enhanced" job applications.
Often they read as generic buzzword nonsense. Occasionally we get candidates who mention the wrong company. Many include items we definitely don't want or need.
A cover letter this morning had this new gem: "With a strong foundation in programming, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and machine learning, along with experience in my past career as a teenager, I am confident that I would bring value to your organization."
So, apparently that letter about terminating my Housing Benefit just means that the 'old' version of "Housing Benefit" is getting cancelled and then doesn't explain that I'm being put on the new "UC Housing Benefit".
Only found out by talking to Citizens Advice.
Lesson for life... if the Government is trying to confused the fuck out of you, get some advice.
Why am I considering buying a used XBox One just to finally play Halo 5 Guardians and see how good/bad it is from my own point of view...
Why am I addicted to Sci-Fi franchises that shoot themselves in the amygdala at a certain point. #halo #masseffect
I knew they'd try to screw me when I switched to Universal Credit (UC), so avoided it for as long as I could.
Then we had a mandatory conversion over to UC in January, and guess what... they REJECTED our Housing Benefit!
So I have to appeal, but they gave me no real instructions on HOW to appeal (they merely state that it should be in writing, but not to whom).
@Nine What about a Thicccpad?
After realizing that my servers were offline since the 25th of January 2025, I've been in contact with Oracle support in a multitude of ways trying to figure out why this happened and how we can recover both the account and data.
I wasn't told that my account was disabled. I didn't receive an E-Mail or anything. When logging in, I was simply told that my username or password was incorrect. After (successfully) resetting my password twice, I realized it wasn't about the password. Oracle had just deleted my account without any notice.
Both through calls and text, always with the same service request (SR) number, I contacted support. Initially, support told me that my account was flagged “Inactive” and hence disabled. They also verified that they saw me login almost daily and that I never missed a payment or anything. Even if an account was inactive, that's never a reason to disable it, especially without any warning E-Mail or an E-Mail letting me know that my account was disabled in the first place.
This chat was the result of all of that, where the highest team I've yet been elevated to told me that there's nothing they can do about it, there's no reason they can tell me for why this happened, and there's no one else I could ask.
The tech person at Oracle at least lets me know that they'd feel similarly betrayed and dislike this handling of user data too 🥲✊
Interestingly, two days before Oracle deleted my account and all servers associated with it, I publicly criticized Oracle's CEO in a viral post for promising dystopian AI surveillance technology to his investors.

What a weird coincidence.
