@Sir_Boops additionally if you ever see anyone whining about how "hip hop/rap isn't really music", it really pisses em off when i note that the aeneid sounds a whole lot like rap when sung properly in meter, beowulf has the same damn effect, and so on.
if you ever need a litmus test, that, i think, is a good one. if it's not a dogwhistle? "oh i didn't think of that connection, interesting, ty" if it is? "how DARE you BESMIRCH these PARAGONS OF WESTERN CULTURE -" yada yada bullshit ensues.
@Sir_Boops so yeah - sounds like a totally bonkers take at first blush - isn't actually.
rap & hip-hop are definitely routinely thrown under the bus as a dogwhistle, and "i hate rap" often means "i hate blackness"
that's different from "musically it's just not my cup of tea" - nobody is forced to like what they don't like - but if you see somebody who loudly talks constantly about how they HATE rap and HATE hip-hop and so on? yeah, odds are pretty good they're racist unfortunately
@Sir_Boops but definitely don't take my white ass as gospel on this shit
https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/1368430209102848 seems like an interesting thing to browse if you can get to a library with full access
https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=7550286 is some talk about the history of the genre which might be a good foundation about how hip-hop and rap have been linked to blackness since inception
https://web.stanford.edu/class/e297c/poverty_prejudice/mediarace/rap.htm may be an interesting read, etc.
@Sir_Boops basically - it may seem like a crazy stupid birdsite opinion at first, but it's a definite thing
i'd encourage you to maybe find some black rappers and black creators and listen to them talk about why rap is important to them, and why an attack on rap is often more than an attack on just a genre of music
(i mean hey, it's black history month, why not y'know?)
you might find some artists you didn't know about and quite enjoy, like how i found https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S28DAeCfLyA
@Sir_Boops again, i'm white, but it's a dog whistle i hear often enough around here in the south that i know what it means and i know how to rebut it
if you have somebody who thinks all rap music is bullshit trash that shouldn't be counted as real music, but hates when you point out western society really loves other metered poetry, you probably have a racist
there ain't really much difference between https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catullus_16 and "vulgar rap lyrics" after all
