@InspectorCaracal ok, here's a few that i haven't played myself/played all the way thru yet -

Lone Survivor

The Longest Journey

Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna) - i suck at platformers but this is really cool as it was explicitly developed with a tribal council to accurately tell an inupiaq tale, and also you unlock little mini-documentaries as you go along to tell you about inupiaq life. REALLY cool.

Journey - because sometimes storytelling can be entirely wordless (!)

@InspectorCaracal the FNAF series definitely has a story but one that is pretty hidden and comes in layers, and is the fodder for many a hysterical youtuber trying to piece it all together. but if you want an example of how a game can leave just enough breadcrumbs to get fans absolutely obsessed with hunting down more, FNAF is as good an example as any fuckin ARG at this point. (and speaking of ARGs... mic.com/articles/180278/the-se may as well put Black Watchmen and Kiss of the Revenant in here too)

@InspectorCaracal
The Last Express, as long as i'm putting point-and-clicks on your plate

Life is Strange should perhaps be on here somewhere, i think it's interesting to consider with its story-as-the-mechanic kinda widget. i'd also maybe consider Until Dawn but that is VERY hammy and going for a specific slasher movie feel, so it depends on your tolerance for that sort of horror. (fun to watch youtubers play though lmao)

speaking of shit that's fun to watch others play... FNAF series.

@InspectorCaracal TO DELVE THRU THE STEAM LIBRARY MORE AND SPAM YOU TAE FOOK...

i'd honestly consider the fallout series science-fantasy - fallout new vegas especially. i consider the Old-World Blues dlc some of the best writing in video games period, and i think its very hammy-old-sci-fi-movie tone would go well with your groove.

Hatoful Boyfriend is another oddball entry. i'm sure there are LOTS of other visual novels to be counted here, that's about as pure story-driven as a game gets lol

@InspectorCaracal (emerald city confidential isn't actually wadjet eye, but i actually found it on fucking big fish games lmao. story-driven puzzle games are also HUGE there, and have an ecosystem entirely their own! largely it's games for women, written by women, featuring women... you just have to do a find-the-item puzzle to get you to every next story beat. i haven't delved into it myself properly, but it's worth knowing about.)

@InspectorCaracal Dr. Langeskov, The Tiger, and The Terribly Cursed Emerald is free, short, and kind of hilarious if you want a hilariously meta detour into video game stories.

Emerald City Confidential is one i'm going to toss in here as representative of the modern point and click adventure games. but that's a huge untapped resource. Wadjet Eye games has a lineup that i haven't actually played yet, but you might really enjoy - Gemini Rue is sci-fi iirc, and new stuff besides.

@InspectorCaracal more bits as i comb through my steam list...

Analogue: A Hate Story. really interesting presentation. gets heavy in a way that definitely sneaks up on you to stab a dagger in your back.

BASTION. if you wanted to include Transistor for science-fantasy that is also good, but Bastion is really one of those "if you haven't played this yet What Are You Doing" ones.

Dishonored/Dishonored 2 i think serve up an interesting and unique world as well.

@InspectorCaracal (it does! it's kind of sparse in among the grinding but i think it's fascinating.)

another fascinating oddball - i think it's now actually abandoned, but if you want some fantasy-world-without-medieval-influence, zerosummer.storynexus.com/ is AMAZING. really fascinatingly written. an oddball, but worth it. it uses the same engine as fallen london, so very easy to just have it in a browser tab and play a little bit when your energy refills, etc.

@InspectorCaracal

-FALLEN LONDON and its sibling games, Sunless Sea and now Sunless Skies - really brilliant and unique storybuilding

-The Secret World/Secret World Legends, because i can go into absolute rhapsodies about the writing in those games all day long (shame about what Funcom is going to the actual game)

-Warframe as a lot of grinding but i think it solidly falls into the science fantasy category tbh, and again i think it's rather unique

@InspectorCaracal let me see if i can get stuff perhaps not represented here yet for you!

-Monkey Island series, especially Monkey Island 2
-Grim Fandango

(you could put sierra here but sierra can go fuck itself)

-Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky/Darkness

-Jade Empire is a Bioware classic that I think gets overlooked a lot but is rather unique in its fantasy take (how much racism is in there is up to you, but John Cleese's cameo is pretty great) >

Team Rocket are Millennials, surprisingly astute take.

Um boy does this hit a little too close to home.

PLEASE LOOK AT JUNIE... HE'S A VERY GOOD EEVEE.... YOUR EEVEES ARE ALSO VERY GOOD EEVEES TOO

@revolverocelot @maple HONEST TO FUCK

that's the shit that's gonna make me lose my mind and start spackling those twee little slogans everywhere. IF YOU SPRINKLE WHEN YOU TINKLE PLEASE BE NEAT AND WIPE THE SEAT i scream at the top of my lungs, hunting some slob down with a fashionably-appointed baseball bat,

realtime footage of me arriving into the splatoon tag on fan fiction dot net

maybe just one bit tmi

@maple I HAVE NO IDEA HOW THEY DO IT EITHER, i think the answer is "not very well" given the hell they leave behind

(just accept that toilet seats are for butts to be on, people who try to hover. it's fine. it's really fine.)

@maple given how many of us try to do the hover-over-the-toilet thing and end up becoming piss sprinklers and not cleaning it up, i'm not comfortable sharing a bathroom with us either :(

running a piece of loading screen art through photoshop to glitch-ey it up a bit totally counts as a good and reasonable idea for fanfic 'cover art' right
