netizen.club/~wildweasel/golfs - Going live with a slightly more analytical article for Golfshrine, as I think about how being good at a golf video game is nowhere near the same thing as being good at actual golf.

IT'S HERE!

My in-depth history of "Instant Graphics and Sound" β€” the little-known text protocol for bringing vector art and music to BBSes β€” has reached the sad (almost) final chapter: "Legacy".

It begins with a look at two psychedelic pieces from fall 1991 that I consider the artistic pinnacle for IGS.

netizen.club/~wildweasel/gsdig - I get a little grumpy-old-man today about digital ownership and whether I actually feel like documenting my disorganized, spread-out library of downloadable golf games.

Whoever's following me from Cohost and misses my fiction: I've been slowly reposting (and updating) some of my stories I wrote for the writing-prompts over here: weaselswriting.dreamwidth.org/ (and some new stuff besides).

Directing a horror gaming documentary is weird. Sometimes I'm trawling through archival records, other times I'm puzzling out how to craft a compelling story from ~50 interviews. And then there are moments where I'm a digitised Keanu Reaves getting beaten up by flying books. (And I wouldn't have it any other way.)

Another thing I'd settle for is a dual-playlist player where you can fill out one list with "quiet" tracks and another list with "action" tracks, and just hit a hotkey (or wire up a game script mod?) to shuffle to a track in the opposite list, as the mood dictates.

I own this one, and it's pretty cool. It's one of those desktop toy things that were popular in the 90s - specifically, it’s a *creation* tool for them. Turns out the cat is also one of the demo mascots. Meet Ribbon-chan

Somebody should make a standalone media player where you can load two songs up, they play in sync, and you hit a button to crossfade between them, so you can listen to stuff like Fire Emblem's two-part battle tracks or the soundtrack to the Flash game Continuity the way they function in game

"Maybe I _have_ hit bottom, and maybe I _do_ look like hell. Lord knows the only exercise I've had lately is tipping the bottle and flipping cards into my hat. ...I'm going to scare up a job today if it means finding somebody's lost puppy."

Tex Murphy, one of my favorite video game characters of all time. Private eye, hardboiled where it counts, total doofus at almost all other times.

Soviet linguist Yuri Knorozov was instrumental in deciphering Mayan script. His whole life he tried to be co-credited with his cat Asya but his editors always refused. In 2012, the Mexicans honored him with a monument that included his beloved cat.
