A lot of groups have all the players make a character by themselves, before meeting.
Don't do this*. It's way easier to make characters that fit together if you make them together.
*ask your GM, at least

@lizardsquid What we've done from time to time in my current game is have someone play an existing charger it NPC for a while then build their character once they've been in the game a while
