A lot of groups have all the players make a character by themselves, before meeting.
Don't do this*. It's way easier to make characters that fit together if you make them together.
*ask your GM, at least
this actually caused a problem with a game I was going to run: I set up a group chat, organised some details, went to bed.
The next day, I checked the chat and overnight several of them had made their characters already.
@lizardsquid Have you ever seen the way the Fate system does character creation? @Terrana could tell you more, but it explicitly requires player characters to show up in each other's backstories.
