@lizardsquid this was actually normalcy on the Mac until OS X; files and applications were typed with a 4-character filesystem property. extensions mean nothing to humans, so you don't need them

people appreciate what the mac did for computing, but neglect a lot of the subtleties about it

That's right, the type is a separate element of the command entirely.
