fragments of an Alternate Universe :: Computing
imagine if instead of file.txt, we had file::ext
all_star::ogg
frogs::png
fragments of an Alternate Universe :: Computing
@lizardsquid
and for accessing files on other computers
file->txt
fragments of an Alternate Universe :: Computing
@catoutofbed @lizardsquid that is _almost_ DECNET
fragments of an Alternate Universe :: Computing
@er1n @catoutofbed oh??
@lizardsquid @catoutofbed on VMS with DECNET, you could have paths like
REMOTEVAX::DISK0:[somedir.subdir.subsubdir]filename
@er1n @catoutofbed yes good (but also bad and awful)
@er1n @lizardsquid @catoutofbed Didn't ye olde MIT/Lisp machines have a similar scheme?
@samis @lizardsquid @catoutofbed i wouldn't know! i've only ever used VAX/VMS, never LISP machines
@er1n @lizardsquid @catoutofbed well, an LMI machine has this: https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2928/33368826354_8d6a43586b_o.png
and others indicate similar structures.
@samis @er1n @catoutofbed woah
fragments of an Alternate Universe :: Computing
@catoutofbed @lizardsquid
More programmers would exist?
fragments of an Alternate Universe :: Computing
@lizardsquid @catoutofbed
Or less computer users?
fragments of an Alternate Universe :: Computing
@lizardsquid what if they had no extensions at all?
fragments of an Alternate Universe :: Computing
@calvin 0_0
fragments of an Alternate Universe :: Computing
@lizardsquid this was actually normalcy on the Mac until OS X; files and applications were typed with a 4-character filesystem property. extensions mean nothing to humans, so you don't need them
people appreciate what the mac did for computing, but neglect a lot of the subtleties about it
fragments of an Alternate Universe :: Computing
@calvin @lizardsquid Then you've got this command:
STRSEU SRCFILE(PRODLIB/HTMLSRC) SRCMBR(INDEX) TYPE(HTML)
That's right, the type is a separate element of the command entirely.
fragments of an Alternate Universe :: Computing
@lizardsquid You yourself could make up a bunch of extensions to make smileys at the end
ThingIMade::D
Textfile::3
Something::V
fragments of an Alternate Universe :: Computing
@BatElite @lizardsquid you can still do horizontal smilies though!
thingoo.oo
filename^^.^^
fragments of an Alternate Universe :: Computing
@lizardsquid @BatElite I have no idea if any system would complain about .^^ as an extension
fragments of an Alternate Universe :: Computing
You are correct!
This is pretty great

or what if
>file_ext>
