@Chel @Zelli There's a lot of cash buy fashion, yeah, and you can apply it to any underlying gear generally. But I've been trying to stick to in-game myself.

@Chel @Zelli I was telling @decis last night that the most jarring thing in this game is when I see a Hyur (basically humans) with normatively manicured hair and such, wearing a tennis outfit, running around. It's like... did you get lost, dear? Are you in the wrong game? Wii Fit is that way...

my pick-up rate for MMOs is admittedly really low, though - the only thing to last more than a few hours so far has been Mabinogi. BUT - it never hurts to try ^^

(especially since it seems like a lot of people are into it, whereas Mabinogi is basically just the Scarly & Chel Show :/ )

@Chel @Zelli Now I'm curious what server Zelli is on, we are on Midgardsommr right now. I have some friends elsewhere, but there's sort of a bias against making alts in this game because you can basically level everything on one character, and doing that all over again on another server isn't the greatest feeling.

@feathers @Zelli Mabinogi is somewhat like that - there are no classes per se, just different occupations that you can switch between once a week (or once a day early on).

...actually, the leveling system is... a bit different, dunno if either of y'all are familiar with the game.

@Chel @Zelli @Chel @Zelli In regards to the larger MMOscape, I honestly haven't played that many (mostly just WoW), but what I can say is that, it's like they took the good parts of a lot of MMOs (including WoW) and somehow brought them together into something better and more attractive. Better ambiance, better visuals, good controls, more interesting gameplay, etc. There are definitely things I don't like as much, but overall, I don't think I could realistically look at WoW after this.

The only bad thing about it is, well, S-E's accounting department. As silly as that sounds, it's like they are trying as hard as they can to sabotage the process of giving them money. It's really unbelievable. Once you get past that it's a nice game, but every time we've had to deal with their payment stuff, it's been a horrible experience. There's a Steam option now, and you can't interchange between the Steam and S-E streams, but I am starting to hesitantly suggest seriously considering that if you want to try it =_=

@Chel @Zelli In regards to classes and levels and such, changing classes in ffxiv is as simple as swapping out your main "weapon", and there is a full gear set system that lets you swap everything in one click. Everything is a class, like crafting, gathering, different fighting classes, healing, etc. You can switch and level at any time except during a battle. Some quests actually involve both a combat and crafting phase.

@Zelli @Chel Yeah, there's some sort of character transfer option that is free, but I haven't tried it. I don't know if it goes across data centers. Cross-server dungeon play doesn't. I get that it's a huge technical hassle for a number of reasons, but the whole sharding thing about MMOs is something that really annoys me. In Blizzard's case, they actually use it on purpose as a money making tool, charging a substantial fee for each transfer.

squenix is pretty good about incentivizing server hops - specifically, transfers to a low-populated server is free and includes additional compensation for housing-related losses during the move. You can also move between data centers.

@feathers @Chel and it also looks like server hops for NA and EU players will be free temporarily after they do the server redistribution so that statics and friend groups affected can decide to stay together.

@Zelli @Chel Huh, I wasn't aware that they charged for any transfers anywhere. Whenever I look in the mog station it always says free.
