great ace attorney
aa1 had the "five strikes and you're out" mechanic. the games that came after that used a health bar so different penalties could be worth different amounts
but so far two games have gone back to the five strikes system: plvaa (medieval fantasy world) and great ace attorney (late 1800s)
this leads me to believe that the health bar mechanic exists in-universe and was introduced in mid-2017
please ignore the gaping contradiction in my theory presented by Turnabout Memories
