Started learning how to make bash scripts, so I can make one that'll automatically turn on my server (if it isn't already on) when I leave the house.

Shouldn't be too hard, right? 😬

If it's any good, I'll probably stick it on github or something. My first ever script. Woo~

Speaking of mounting things internally... ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Nah, idk where I was going with this.

Oh, cool. The new home server provides enough power to USB ports (even while shut down) to power a Raspberry Pi.

...maybe I could mount it internally.

rsync just deleted a lot of important stuff.

Fuck.

I thought --delete-excluded was supposed to delete anything that has been excluded from the destination (said destination being a BACKUP folder).

But it removed the stuff I excluded from the place being backed up.

Stuff in /dev/, /sys/, /proc/... everything in my home folder. WTF.

@sungo Good point.

It'd be nice if there was a cheap, open source phone eventually. Something more like a computer, where you can put pretty much any OS on it.

...I can dream. :P

@sungo They've been sending out security patches once a month, which is pretty cool.

Though I do wish it was easier to acquire root and/or use a custom ROM. Those will be my priority in my next purchase, in a year or two.

I'm getting around 6-7 hours of screen-on-time; my previous phone would get around 3.

@sungo Well... I have the Moto Z Play and love it!

Battery life is crazy-good. Can't comment on the vanilla Moto Z though.

Lewd/TMI

One of the worst things about this hot weather is that it's too hot to comfortably take care of any libido... "problems", be it solo or otherwise.

Help.

Cold brew was a success. Will definitely make again. :D

Ok, so I know how to check what other devices are on the home network (using arp-scan), and I know how to wake devices via WoL from the Raspberry Pi...

Absolutely no idea how to put the two together and send a WoL packet to the server when someone isn't on the home network.

Where do I start? A bash script? Python? I have absolutely zero coding experience (though can learn pretty fast!).

...or even use the Pi's GPIO pins to short out the power pins on the server's motherboard, instead of using WoL.

Decisions, decisions!

Ooh! Or maybe just monitor the home WiFi to see who's (or rather who's not) connected. Don't need their exact location.

Show thread

Hm. maybe I'll actually use the RaspberryPi as a little WoL thing.

The new server needs to be accessed while people are out... so maybe have the Pi monitoring people's locations? When they leave the house, it sends a WoL packet to the server so it isn't idling when people are at home.

I'll leave the shutting down manual though, in case I actually need access while I'm at home.
