When I was growing up in Utah, the debate centered around "offerings".
Do you pay 10% of your net? Or 10% of your gross? Do you pay tithing on social security income? How much extra should you pay on Fast Sunday (a monthly thing)?
It's all about giving your money to the church. Because rewards in heaven, and god is watching, and all that.
These are the types of homes the bishops and apostles at the top of the LDS pyramid scheme are building in Utah. Only 3% of tithing revenue is spent on bona fide charity programs. The rest is spent on real estate and other stockpiles of wealth.

I continue to be mystified by the sentiment that being a First Amendment advocate means *socially* tolerating people I find obnoxious or contemptible. I keep getting βwhat kind of free speech advocate blocks people?β The kind who doesnβt deal with assholes when not professionally compelled to do so. The First Amendment isnβt a hair shirt.
I've always told them free speech goes both ways. They can spout their crap at me, then it's my turn to tell them to fuck off and block them. It's all part of the beautiful tapestry of being able to speak your mind.
