Extremists are attempting to infiltrate their board to ban books and eradicate a source of knowledge/support for marginalized folks in their small community. The article seems a little short on data - mostly it's just a chart, without context.
"Independent" covers everything outside the very small range covered by the GQP (it's gotten much smaller, with the rise of MAGA), and the slightly larger area covered by the Dems. Independent isn't just the area between them, it's also all the area to the left and right of them.

Right now, Charlie is talking to me and nudging me. He wants to go for a walk. But I think I'll wait for it to warm up a bit.
In this photograph, I'm standing at the back door and Charlie is giving me the border collie stare as he creeps slowly toward me. Anybody who has a border collie probably knows what I'm talking about.
