Growing up, I had three sisters. One of them was a quiet child, often angry or sullen and sometimes cruel.

One day that person went away.

And then I had a brother.

He was cheerful and warm, finally comfortable in a body he'd wanted his entire life.

I'm pretty sick and tired of the word "alarmist."

Our world is splitting at the seams. Fascism is here, the planet is hurtling toward climate catastrophe, inequality is higher than ever, bribery is legal, our water is being poisoned, and the government not only ignores our pleas but grows more oppressive by the day.

To be frank, the alarms should have been louder and gone off sooner. We should all be screaming out our windows.

She had no idea, until that swooping owl's very large talons grazed the top of her head. She stood and watched it fly off in surprise until she realized what just happened and ran to the front steps to go inside, now, please.
