This was something I had failed to consider. Police departments in the US are standing armies. This might be why we don't protest like the French. Police in the US are far too militarized without all of the training.

I would argue we're being held hostage to the current SCOTUS' deliberate misinterpretation of what 17th (18th, actually) century farmers wrote down.
