My son gave his sisters, who are big fans of the movie, packs of 1986 Little Shop of Horrors trading cards/stickers we found in a vintage store. They loved themβand then talked him into eating the 37 year old gum they came with. He can generally handle pretty gross stuff (he's a nine year old boy, after all) but I've never before seen him run to the sink and wash his mouth out with quite so much urgency.
Thread on a wild yet not uncommon exchange today. I share as an anecdote of how embedded racism is in our society & how close it's tied to economics
A white guy named "Bill" age ~60 says to, "Where are you *from* from?"
Me: [sigh] I'm from Pakistan. [I go back to my phone]
Bill: Pakistan? What do you do for a living?
Me: Civil rights lawyer
Bill: I'm a lawyer too! But I stay away from race & women stuff. Last thing I need is to be called racist or accused of sexual harassment
Me: Huh?

@ScottSoCal You would get no argument from me.
I am always mindful that when it comes to intellectual deficit, the Republican lift doesnβt have access to the executive floors.
Thereβs no better example than support for Ukraine in their battle for survival. Only intellectually challenged Republicans would see military support as a poor investment.
It is bargain basement cheep to support another army to degrade the military assets of such a major adversary, without risking a single U.S. soldier. Alas itβs beyond the mental capacity of some.
It snows about 7-8 months a year in the north. I have to do this about 6-7 times in 24 hours when it snows. Now you can calculate how many times I remove snow from my deck every year. Good exercise, eh? Besides the winter workout, I am sending you love, warmth, joy, hope and positivity. Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/B0JKNO2CgdU
Hey, check it out, my wife just joined Mastodon. Go say hi to @PokeMom everybody!
@BeazLouise @ScottSoCal
It does look like a Peregrine, a juvenile with the darker brown on the chest. May be trying to get through first winter, trying to find a territory. It's rough out there! Have learned from a rough past year watching Cal Falcons @CalFalconCam https://calfalcons.berkeley.edu/
I don't understand the anti-trans transhumanist techbros out there either.
My dudes, the entire point of transhumanism is radical bodily autonomy.
If you're hung up on what someone's original meatsack was, you're gonna have a bad time in the transhumanist future you're after.
@ScottSoCal absolutely!
Itβs a super-relaxed Boxing Day here, and Daisy wants her nose booped. #dogsofmastodon #greyhounds
The results from yesterdayβs #eggnog poll are in! Thank you all for humoring me. While a fair share of those who participated agree with me that eggnog is delicious (42%*), 1 in 4 participants have never even had eggnog! In the original thread we had some great discussions around eggnog additions, homemade vs store-bought, and the acceptable quantity to imbibe. Eggnog is a truly divisive holiday drink. *n=161

So... me. Work in aerospace, more space, not as much aero. Can fix my own car, choose not to. Can fix the random appliance of your choice. Hardcore introvert in person, which is why I love online. Lifelong science fiction fan. Read constantly. Scalzi is my favorite author, because he mixes exactly the right amount of snark into his writing.
