Who is this?

Much of the bird hunting I do is from my backyard. I sit out there with my camera and watch the bird feeders and surrounding trees and shrubs. I take a lot of pictures, mostly chipping sparrows and cardinals. I see birds off in the distance and snap a picture thinking it's probably a sparrow. But occasionally when I look through the photos, I have to ask myself, "what is this?" That is the case with this pine siskin, I've never before photographed one, so I had to identify it first.

Paul Sonne, co-author, was a correspondent for the Wall Street Journal in Moscow.

BTW, from the same article: "And the situation for Russia may be worse. During a NATO meeting last month, U.K. Defense Minister Ben Wallace said that 97 percent of Russia’s army was already deployed in Ukraine and that Moscow was suffering “First World War levels of attrition.”

The urgency of Western nations stepping up and supplying critically needed military and civilian aid can not be stressed higher though.

Properly jaw-dropping moment this evening: an e-mail from my US publisher saying that "since it's a science book", they'll publish Blue Machine WITH METRIC UNITS.
