Born in 1831, Rebecca Lee Crumpler
became the first Black woman to graduate from medical school in the U.S.

Despite facing extreme racism & sexism, she practiced medicine with a focus on women & children. She also provided medical care to freed slaves.

It's a very strange feeling having lived through a brief window of enlightened attitudes and ambivalence toward our existence, knowing under other circumstances, I could have transitioned as a kid, gotten blockers, etc. and passed seamlessly into the world as the woman I've always been.

It's even more horrifying knowing there are trans kids just like me who will be denied those opportunities or forced to flee their homes in order to have even a modicum of acceptance.

I thought that this neotropic cormorant was trying to take off and fly away. But the cormorant just expended a tremendous amount of energy to move about 50 feet then settled down again. Maybe it was just getting some exercise.

I took this photo at the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana.

"Neotropic Cormorant’s calls are sometimes likened to piglike grunts. In Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries, local names that allude to this call include “pig duck” (pato cerdo, pato puerco), “dirty duck” (pato chancho), and “oinking duck (pato gruñón)!" - allaboutbirds.org

Light leaks happen in film photography when light gets in where it shouldn't - this can happen when loading & unloading film, if you mistakenly open the back of the camera mid-roll (we've all done it!), or sometimes just where an old camera has dodgy light seals and it leaks in around the joins in the camera.
