Have you ever asked yourself what you would be done in 1840-1860 or 1940-1960 regarding slavery and civil rights?
You're doing it.
As Juneteenth approaches, I find myself filled with reflection more than celebration. This has not been a good year for my family or myself. It's been a battle against racism, flat out, in workplaces and in public services.
Racism is frustrating. It isn't something that I can opt-in or opt-out of either. It's ever present and insidious. It is a drain on mental and physical health.
I don't normally link to Vox, but I read this article and was like "yup" - https://www.vox.com/race/23739082/discrimination-racism-black-people-time-juneteenth
This is Forever in a Seashell.
I'm having a low day and in need of knowing my art isn't pointless, so I'm uploading a spoken word audio that is yet to be finally edited amd hope it will mean something to someone. It's about when feelings overlap in a relationship, when boundaries are unclear and both partners don't know how to overcome a difficulty in their relationship and the effects of it on their mental health. I'd love to hear your thoughts β€οΈ
BORG: We are the Borg. Resistance is futile.
MY 5 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER: Why?
BORG: We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own.
5YO: Why?
BORG: To expand the collective.
5YO: Why?
BORG: So that we may achieve perfection.
5YO: Why?
BORG: To reach the pinnacle of our evolution.
5YO: Why?
BORG: *sigh* Because itβs just something we do, ok?
5YO: Why?
BORG: β¦ you know what? F this β¦*opens a transwarp conduit and leaves*
Blue leg.
Here are a couple of tufted titmice (Baeolophus bicolor). I know there are hard core titmouse fans. When I was looking at this photo, I noticed that one bird has one blue leg and the other three legs between the two birds are grayish pink. Odd, maybe a trick of light?
"Tufted Titmice nest in tree holes (and nest boxes), but they canβt excavate their own nest cavities. Instead, they use natural holes and cavities left by woodpeckers. These speciesβ dependence on dead wood for their homes is one reason why itβs important to allow dead trees to remain in forests rather than cutting them down." - allaboutbirds.org

Exciting news: Illinois bans...book bans. https://bookriot.com/illinois-has-officially-banned-book-bans/
Gov. Petzker: "Young people shouldnβt be kept from learning about the realities of our world; I want them to become critical thinkers, exposed to ideas that they disagree with, proud of what our nation has overcome, and thoughtful about what comes next. Everyone deserves to see themselves reflected in the books they read, the art they see, the history they learn."
This is what true leadership looks like.
Here's a break from the TFG news.
Democrats have been asking for seven years why the media haven't been coming to food coops, Pride, and downtown summer festivals to find out what Clinton and Biden voters think instead of spending so much time at the small town diner to find out what the red hat brigade wants.
So many candidates tout their small-town values. Paul Waldman suggests that we want candidates with big-city values. Cities are complicated and ever-changing.

All Five Eyes countries should be filing charges of espionage against trump and his personal lackeys for exposing our national security secrets and intelligence apparatus to his Saudi pals and others. Extradite and nail this scumbag. π¨π¦π¬π§π³πΏπ¦πΊ #TraitorTrump
@aBirdieOnaWire @BikeBaroness We can never stop every trans person in the world from behaving outlandishly or even criminally. We're human beings. Some of us are bad ones, many of us are foolish at least sometimes.
For me, having love and compassion for my trans community means not holding us to ridiculous standards that are only imposed bc people hate us and are looking for an excuse. Even if no one every gave them an excuse they'd make something up anyway.
"How dare you suggest we are neo-Nazi terrorists, let's see how funny your little leftist jokes are on the Day of the Rope when we redeem this nation by exterminating you and everyone who does not properly bow to our messianic ubermensch leader" is not the best argument someone can make but a whole bunch of white revanchist dimwits are typing some iteration of it right now all across social media.
Keep in mind... this happened to a NINE YEAR OLD little girl.
If women don't live up to the #patriarchy's standard of femininity, old white dudes will want to see your kitty to make sure you're a *real* girl.
Trans women were the easy first target in a move to get all women back in line.

Okay, Mastodon friends, I rarely ask for amplification about my day job, but I personally pushed for my employer to make a big investment in enabling the fediverse, and I'd love for everyone to show that the support is appreciated. On June 28, you can join us for a (FREE!) hands-on conversation about how the Fastly team worked to support @Mastodon while the service was under a *massive* DDOS attack. Everyone who cares about scaling the fediverse should join: https://learn.fastly.com/security-mitigating-ddos-and-traffic-surges-with-mastodon @devs
