So, Venus has been found to have a squishy outer shell. We also know of ''cotton candy exoplanets.'' Is it just us, or do planets sound... delicious? https://go.nasa.gov/3IrJ80w

Hi, everybody!
New server, new #introduction. I'm Jennifer, go by 'Theogrin' and 'Schism' elsewhere, and I'm a #trans woman in her mid-30s just hanging out here and trying not to go crazy in today's world. My big draws are #writing, #hacking, #tech, #music and of course cute girls. Might be a little #politics in there too. Oh, and #cooking - I cook a lot.
Hope to make friends with all those worthy of friendship!
The world cannot turn a blind eye to Russian war crimes and the everyday suffering of the Ukrainian people.
We must help the Ukrainians win this war and rebuild their country.

Earlier this morning, someone told me that language is understood inherently. They didn't mean to say it, they just spoke from a situation in which the concept of talking and being heard was never up to question. Very American, very English as a first language, very able bodied of him.
I asked him why he felt that it wasn't useful to communicate properly, but he never responded.
I again asked him why he felt that we shouldn't focus on making sure the message was heard. He stopped and looked very confused at me.
I was asking in #ASL. I'm not fluent, but I grew up with several deaf relatives (bad medicine made a lot of deaf kids) and was diagnosed with hearing issues young - so it's always been an area I was around.
The realization on his face was absolutely worth the struggle we went through to get there. It was a total blindness from him. He just never considered he would say something to others that they just wouldn't be ABLE to understand.
Our conversation was about messaging in general, so he was ready for the topic. But its a harsh reminder to everyone that everyone is different. I have hearing issues, you might have color blindess or maybe your back doesn't allow you to stand for long periods.
Being aware of these differences makes us more human - not less. Being aware of the concept of 'other' costs so little and can mean so much.
My mental health tips for using Mastodon...
* Turn off notifications if you're feeling overwhelmed.
* If using desktop advanced mode, keep your notifications on "Mentions" rather then "All". Check "All" periodically.
* Remember that you DO NOT have to explain yourself to anyone.
* You can not be everything to everyone. If people don't like you, remember that it's not about YOU. It's about the who they THINK you are.
What are YOUR mental health tips for using Mastodon?
So... me. Work in aerospace, more space, not as much aero. Can fix my own car, choose not to. Can fix the random appliance of your choice. Hardcore introvert in person, which is why I love online. Lifelong science fiction fan. Read constantly. Scalzi is my favorite author, because he mixes exactly the right amount of snark into his writing. Together with a guy 30+ years, married since it was legal. Own a home in CA and don't plan to leave unless I immigrate to another country.
