RE: mastodon.social/@ianRobinson/1

i guess the lesson is don't buy your friends an Apple gift card this holiday season

I'll file a bug report if I can make it happen again.

But why ports? Mainly because audio/pulseaudio is still the most obtuse sound mixer, and it's an optional yet default dependency for several packages I need.

Of all the ports to fail during an upgrade, why misc/freebsd-doc-en? That's a real first.

Markdown to HTML in pure AWK: git.sr.ht/~knazarov/markdown.a

It works in BSD AWK & should work in any POSIX AWK, not just gawk.

If I understand this correctly the reason RAM has quadrupled in price is that a huge quantity of RAM that hasn't been produced yet has been bought to populate GPUs that also haven't been produced yet to go in datacenters that haven't been built yet that will be powered by infrastructure that might never exist to meet a demand that doesn't exist at all to make profit margins that mathematically can't exist and economists talk about this thing they call the "rational markets hypothesis".

Nobody's tried reaching me about my car's extended warranty in quite some time.

Now they're trying to reach me about my home's extended warranty instead.

TIL why Sun Microsystems (Bill Joy and all) bought an office suite company in 1999. 🤨

"In August 1999, Star Division was acquired by Sun Microsystems[81][82] for US$59.5 million (equivalent to US$112 million in 2024), reportedly because the acquisition was less expensive than licensing Microsoft Office for Sun's 42,000 employees.[83][84]"

And that's how eventually LibreOffice became available for many. 😇

IIRC, the bloat is because Microsoft stuffs an entire copy of C:\Users in its C:\Windows.old archive, isn't it?

I don't know why I'm so constantly impressed with Microsoft's ability to bloat software.

My tech support patient is a PC with Windows 10 1809. The first thing it did when I turned it on was try and fail to install Windows 10 22H2.

However, it then installed Windows 10 1903 successfully, then refused to even offer 22H2 anymore.

The fix, it turns out, was running Disk Cleanup on system files, and using it to delete previous versions.

Fifty-nine gigabytes (59 GB) of previous versions!

Shoutout to anyone who is doing anything today.

Stay strong. Doing things is hard.

i genuinely have real strong opinions about how docker has created a generation of young linux sysadmins who have zero actual practical sysadmin skills, zero troubleshooting skills, and zero problem solving skills

and yet those same people ride the title of calling themselves "linux sysadmins"

ur not a sysadmin ur a docker compose file user
