@ThisQueerBashesBack@anarchism.space …they do make donations on their own. It's called "employee matching".
This is a campaign that not only raises awareness of the charity but creates an influx of cash for that charity. Yes, the money isn't Hasbro's, but without Hasbro's involvement you wouldn't have donated to this charity, would you? and Hasbro isn't making any money from the transaction, just advertising and goodwill.
@ThisQueerBashesBack@anarchism.space would you prefer they phrased it as "for a limited time, donate $25 or more and receive a free thank-you gift in the form of a custom t-shirt from one of our contributing partners"
like… I don't know what changes you would actually want to make to this campaign? Your proposed "we donated x-many dollars and also were selling merch in which we keep the profits" seems worse than "we're donating x dollars for each unit of merch sold" for the charity in terms of exposure & money.
@ThisQueerBashesBack@anarchism.space This is already a strictly better campaign than (say) Twitch Unity, where Twitch sold time-limited Twitch branded queer-friendly merch but without any promise of a donation attached (in other words, pure pinkwashing).
In a perfect world they'd donate directly but in a perfect world they also wouldn't be allowed to make a CCG or to make profits as a private enterprise. In THIS world, they're donating 100% of the profits of shirt sales. Do you want a shirt or not
@ThisQueerBashesBack@anarchism.space If you want to donate to the charity directly, nobody's stopping you, but if you'd like to tell people who would recognise the symbol already "hey I not only play magic but I'm queer", this is your chance to do so while also supporting the charity.
tldr, a lot of people would have bought these shirts even if they didn't benefit an organisation, but the organisation is a good one who can definitely benefit. Hasbro are capitalists, but that's not going to change anytime soon.
@ThisQueerBashesBack@anarchism.space And? They're capitalists, of course they're going to run a campaign like this so it generates advertising and goodwill.
That still means:
-you can use the products on offer to signal your identity (both a magic player and queer)
-you can benefit a queer youth organisation in Seattle, a city with a very large homeless trans youth population
