conspiracy theories

I think a key element of conspiracy theories that needs more discussion when they're brought up is the unfalsifiable nature of them.

It's not necessarily a conspiracy theory to question an official narrative of events, that's just scepticism. Really it becomes a conspiracy theory when there is an insistence on an alternate narrative, with any evidence contradicting that narrative or any absence of evidence being taken as evidence of some broad coverup.

There is a circular nature to conspiratorial thinking that makes it incredibly difficult to shake people out of, because they're essentially living an alternate reality. This is why anti-vaxxers, 9/11 truthers and Q people essentially form into their own wee cults, because they can no longer relate to people that don't live in the reality that they have constructed for themselves.

@goaty Okay, just realized the reading I used isn't exactly a smart one. I mean, it's the studio's IP. No court is gonna rule against them on that, even if it's not "freely and legally available".

As for the other reading, yeah. Sounds fine to me.

@goaty Depends on how you define "freely", I suppose. Like, the studio owns the IP, so selling it would be legal and it would be " legally available", I think. But would the ROM being sold count as it being "freely" available? I mean, you can just get it, even if there is a fee attached. Is that fee impinging on one's ability to "freely" access it?

(Honestly, I might be misreading this. Not sure. I'm reading it as the ROM was dumped under the condition, not sold under it.)

9/11 cold take

If you really wanted to "serve your country" following that tragedy, you would have become a firefighter or some sort of emergency medical personnel (EMT, paramedic, ER nurse/doctor), not signed up to invade a country unrelated to what happened in order to go shoot brown people. Fuck off with that bullshit.
