@Socks i really really like that visual of tending our own gardens while minimizing harm, thank u 💕💕

@pbandkate speaking as a person who also identifies as queer, iirc “gay” and “lesbian” had been slurs before as well, before being reclaimed by the community. You should of course do your best to minimize the trauma you inflict on others, but when it comes to your identity and how you navigate through the world, I feel like we each ought to tend our own garden.

@pbandkate Kate you're the best and this isn't my wheelhouse at all but I feel like you should be able to identify in whatever way makes you most comfortable

"queer is a slur" is almost always a sign of gatekeeping. Ask them how they feel about aspec or MOGAI peeps in the community and they'll show their true colors.

@pbandkate I kind of hate this discourse as someone who has been hearing it for years and years. I will not give up queer; there is no substitute for me. nothing else fits. nothing else so perfectly encapsulates non-hetero, non-cis, non-normative identity in one word. nothing! the best I can do is agree to avoid using it around company that objects to it but they will not stop me from using it as an identifier for myself because it is such a huge part of "me" by this point.

@pbandkate
That doesn't mean others should use it for themselves. Again, "queer is a slur" is a red flag of a potential gatekeeper.

Beware any time anyone say "queer is a slur"

I've seen them, I've fought them and I confirm you that they are all of the time gatekeepers. They would often mock MOGAI identities and aspec people. They are against microlabelling and self identification of individuals in the queer community and often unconsciously bring out the same rhetoric as TERF and truscum/transmed.

Fuck that, identify as whatever you want. Gay is even more as a slur than queer where I come from.

@pbandkate
Identify as queer. Seize it, don't give it back to our oppressors.

@pbandkate yes this is how I feel too...

@pbandkate
Queer is one of the most widely reclaimed word. People who call it slurs are 9/10 times regurgitating TERF/truscum rhetoric. In the same breath they would also mock it with "kweer", which is also racist.

having a really hard time here lately with the word queer. i know that it upsets a lot of people for very valid reasons and that for a lot of people it’s still a slur but..... it’s how i identify. it feels so much more right than “bi” or even “pan” and it took me so much time to feel confident enough to finally identify as queer and it felt so so good to start identifying as that and saying it and claiming that word. so to feel like i now shouldn’t be saying it is.. tough
