@rym I'm pretty certain this is audio watermarking. Five years ago, the Spanish soccer league La Liga's official app got busted for this. If the app detected the user was in a public place that didn't pay for a license to show the game, the app would turn the user's microphone on to listen for the game's broadcast audio. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2019/06/spanish-soccer-leagues-app-caught-eavesdropping-on-users-in-anti-piracy-push/
These leagues probably send a different watermark to each broadcaster. The watermarks have to be loud enough to survive re-encoding, so it's noticeable.

@tom @pokemon Really? Over here on Mbin, I throw around 5.7MB GIFs. I wonder if my Mastodon just can't handle attachments this size.

@tom @benlk @pokemon @fediplayspokemon Oh, I think you're right. The last non-Atomic Purple post contains this MP4 file which works fine. That MP4 was probably a GIF when you uploaded it. MP4 doesn't support transparency at all, so other parts of Mastodon fail when they try to convert it.

@tom @pokemon Oh yeah, that makes sense. The image on the right is a 32x32 HTML5 canvas. When I click on the left image to zoom in, it actually tries to load the right image as https://computerfairi.es/media_proxy/112407118008012955/original , but for me, that returns an error "The page you are looking for isn't here."

@tom @pokemon Whoaaaa, if I try to zoom, a video player tries to load, but there's no video in it. The progress bar eventually changes to say it's a 00:00 video, but no other errors.

@tom @pokemon Here you go. It's treating that GIF as hidden media, similar to how it would hide the screenshot if I clicked the eyeball. But, there's no un-hiding the GIF.

Since the switch to Atomic Purple, the GIFs no longer load on my instance that's running Glitchsoc v3.4.1. The GIFs look like they're hidden. I can see them OK on other instances.
